Take a closer look at NVC

NVC has a rich history in telecommunications in and around the Aberdeen area.

Established in 1997, NVC began by providing dial-up Internet access to residents of northeast South Dakota. The company was established through a joint partnership by James Valley Telecommunications (JVT) of Groton, SD and Northern Electric Cooperative of Bath, SD.

In April of 1998, the company was granted a Certificate of Authority by the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission to become a competitive local exchange carrier, and a marketing survey conducted that same year showed a need for and an interest in advanced telecommunications services in the Aberdeen area.

In October of 1998, NVC officially began construction of a new telecommunications network for the city of Aberdeen. Fiber optic and copper lines were constructed strategically throughout the city to provide advanced telecommunications services to many homes and businesses. Construction continued each year thereafter spreading NVC service to additional areas of the city.

The company moved its office from Northern Electric Cooperative of Bath to Aberdeen in May of 1999 to provide improved customer service and easy walk-in access.

In May of 2001, NVC became a solely owned subsidiary of JVT. JVT is a cooperative that has served the area for over 60 years.

NVC launched digital cable television service in 2003 giving customers the ability to take phone, high-speed Internet and cable TV services all from one company. Cable TV service now includes an interactive guide, digital music, VOD, Cloud DVR, HD, TV Everywhere, and Restart TV.

In 2005, NVC began constructing fiber optic lines in Redfield, SD in order to offer high speed digital services in the Redfield market.

In 2007, NVC began offering cellular communications services after building its own network. The service later expanded to include 4G and other advanced technologies. Wireless high speed internet access is now available throughout Brown and Spink counties as well as portions of Day, Faulk, and Edmunds counties. Wireless internet access now spreads NVC’s service to all corners of the Aberdeen trade area and makes NVC offerings available to every single home and business.

In September 2012, NVC moved their retail services to 6^th Ave SE to create room for more products and customer interaction.

NVC was one of only forty companies nationwide to receive a Rural Broadband Experiment (RBE) grant in 2015. The company based its application on providing high speed wireless internet access to over 400 locations not then served with broadband internet access.

NVC expanded its business further in 2017 when it purchased the wireless internet operations of Northern Wireless. The purchase led to greater economies of scale for NVC.

Starting with Dial-Up internet service in the beginning, NVC now offers broadband speeds up to 250 Mbps to residential customers and business speeds up to 1Gb. Anticipating the needs of customers and meeting those needs has led the company through a cycle of innovation and growth.

NVC has been recognized twice by the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce ABBY Awards. In 2002, they received the Customer Service Award and in 2016 the company received the Community Involvement – Business award.
